silent

I recently posted a quote on my other blog that celebrates the gift of shutting up. More quotes extolling silence appeared in the comments section. The conversation (yes, it is slightly ironic to have a conversation about not talking) brought to mind one of my favorite Hebrew proverbs.

Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent,
and discerning if he holds his tongue. Proverbs 17:28

I love the confluence of commonsense and comedy in those words!

I think that the scripture in Psalms that says, "Be still and know that I am God." Translates to mean that we need to "shut up" and listen to God. I even find myself running at the mouth in my prayers at time. I have so much to put on the table that it seems difficult to remember that if we do what God asks and silence ourselves, mind and mouth we might learn something or even hear an answer to the prayers we are praying....

It is helpful to consider how many different types of noise we subject ourselves to. Nutritional noise is a fascinating idea -- most Americans consume so much processed junk that our bodies are buzzing with chatter. Sugar, salt, fat, hollow carbs... It is a true discipline to change our life-practices long enough to be able to hear what our bodies are really saying.
