Thrift Store Ecclesiology

Shane Claiborne prefers attending existing churches to planting new ones. The idea is that there are already plenty of churches. Why spend resources on making more?

It’s consistent with the Value Village ethos of new monasticism. Shopping at thrift stores goes beyond saving money: it’s an incremental resistance against wasteful consumerism – a tangible gesture to use what’s been made before making more.

This is an interesting topic to me. I'm in constant conflict of loving technology, but wanting a simple life. Sometimes I get sick thinking of all the "junk" that we have in not one, but 2 storage units. Collecting dust. It's not that I'm attached to the stuff - but it takes so much time to sort through it all...what to donate, what to sell, what should really be kept and why. I now look on Craigslist for items before looking to buy new, for the same reason. We are all in different places in our lives. I have stuff I no longer want, but it would be very helpful to others...but connecting is the trick.
